So I’ve been running my new MacBook Pro with a Dell 24″ external monitor. Today I noticed something weird. The text is fuzzy on the big screen. I don’t have this problem with my PC running on an identical monitor, and I have clear type turned on in Windows XP. This led me to play around with the system settings for smoothing the fonts. I wasn’t really able to fix the problem doing this. Is this a monitor calibration issue? Is this a software issue? Is this just how the Mac behaves? Would it look better if I had a Apple Cinema display? I tried a few different applications, so I don’t think it’s a application specific issue. Any ideas? Cause this is going to burn my eyeballs out.
I actually find this to be a rather strange issue, given the emphasis Apple has on how things look. I can’t help feeling like I’m missing something important here. Hopefully, someone can help me out with this.

I’m assuming you have the resolution set correctly to 1920×1200 and that you’re using a DVI connection. It could be the resolution is slightly off the display’s native resolution so you are using the crappy scaler inside the monitor.
I have the same monitor and it works fine with mine, as does my 30" Cinema Display.
Yup, 1920×1200 dvi. I even calibrated the monitor (as best I could without one of those calbiration thingy’s you stick to the screen) using the mac os x calibration wizard.
Any other suggestions? Text looks good a few inches away using Windows XP, but looks like a fuzzy mess on Mac Os X (tiger with latest updates). This is with two identical dell 2407WFP monitors, one hooked to Mac one to PC.
thanks!
I have the exact same problem when I use the DVI output to a Dell 1905FP. When hooked up to the PC, text is super clear but when it’s hooked up to my macbook pro, it’s a blurry mess and it "grows" fuzzier as time goes by.
The monitor is running at native resolution. This even happend on my roommate’s cinema display as well.
